The Box - 2009 - Trailer

What if someone gave you a box containing a button that, if pushed, would bring you a million dollars…but simultaneously take the life of someone you don’t know? Would you do it? And what would be the consequences?

The year is 1976. Norma Lewis (Cameron Diaz) is a teacher at a private high school and her husband, Arthur (James Marsden), is an engineer working at NASA. They are, by all accounts, an average couple living a normal life in the suburbs with their young son…until a mysterious man with a horribly disfigured face appears on their doorstep (Frank Langella) and presents them with a life-altering proposition: the box.

With only 24 hours to make their choice, Norma and Arthur face a momentous moral dilemma. What they don't realize is that no matter what they decide, terrifying consequences will have already been set in motion. They soon discover that the ramifications of this decision are beyond their control and extend far beyond their own fortune and fate.

Writer/director Richard Kelly’s new movie 'The Box' arrives in theaters this November.

Released in U.S. November 6 2009
Released in U.K. November 4 2009

The Box is an upcoming horror film based on the 1970 short story "Button, Button" by author Richard Matheson. It was written for the screen and directed by Richard Kelly, whose 2001 sci-fi mystery thriller “Donnie Darko,” a cult classic, earned a Grand Jury Prize nomination at the Sundance Film Festival. “Donnie Darko” went on to screen at film festivals around the world and brought Kelly Independent Spirit Award nominations for Best First Feature and Best First Screenplay.

The Box was the first film to be shown at Lund International Fantastic Film Festival on September 17 2009 held in Sweden.

Stars Cameron Diaz and James Marsden as a couple who receive a box with a mysterious power.

Production began on November 2007 and concluded in February 2008. The film is originally scheduled for release on October 30, 2009, but on July 31, 2009, it was announced the release date was to be delayed to November 6, 2009.

Despite the slightly laboured beginning, the middle section of The Box does have inventive moments, but then the film slumps again in the over explained final act. The Box tries to tackle the big themes of human nature and our place in the universe but it never quite manages to rise to the occasion. It is a film that wants to reach to a greater depth but it ends up feeling more like a lesser episode of The X Files.
